KAWASAKI, Japan — The United States scored two early touchdowns Thursday to defeat Germany 33-7 and advance to the final of the American football World Cup.

Runningback Cody Childs put the U.S. up 6-0 just over two minutes in when he ran the ball in from the 6-yard line. Wendell Johnson scored from the 3-yard four minutes later and the U.S. added a safety to take a 16-0 lead in the first quarter. Cornerback Rob Rodriguez had two blocked kicks for the U.S. team.

“Our special teams were outstanding,” said U.S. coach John Mackovic. “They bailed us out when we weren’t moving the ball and our defense hung tough.”

The U.S. team, making its debut in the six-nation tournament, is comprised of players from Division I, II and III colleges.

Germany scored its only points of the game when U.S. quarterback Jeff Ballard threw an interception that defensive back Matthias Weil ran back for a 94-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Adam Austin was the starting quarterback for the U.S. and completed five of eight passes for 106 yards.

The U.S., which defeated South Korea 77-0 in its opening game, improved to 2-0 in Group B and will face either Japan or Sweden in Sunday’s final. Craig Coffin kicked a 21-yard field goal late in the third quarter to give the U.S. a 19-7 lead.

Doug Blakowski scored from the 1-yard line with 7:40 left in the game and Diezeas Calbert completed the scoring when he intercepted a Joachim Ullrich pass and ran it back for a 58-yard touchdown with just over six minutes left.

The tournament is being played for the third time. Japan won in 1999 and 2003.

The NCAA has announced that the Oklahoma football program must forfeit all wins from the 2005 season and will lose scholarships as a result of players being paid for work they had not performed.

Mitchell Cozad, who is charged with attempted first-degree murder, wanted the statements made to investigators thrown out partly because his implied requests for a lawyer were ignored. A Weld County judge rule against Cozad.

Cozad is accused of leaving a 3- to 5-inch deep gash in Rafael Mendoza’s kicking leg during a Sept. 11 ambush. Police have said they believe Cozad stabbed Mendoza in an attempt to get the starting job. Cozad has pleaded not guilty and remains free on $500,000 bail. If found guilty of attempted murder, he could face up to 48 years in prison. The case is set to go to trial July 30.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama has self-reported three secondary NCAA violations in football since Oct. 16, 2006, and is preparing a report on coach Nick Saban’s recent contact with recruits that might have broken the rules, The Birmingham News reported. Two of the violations came after Saban’s hiring on Jan. 4, though one happened without the knowledge of Saban or his staff, according to documents the newspaper obtained through an open records request.

“I would like nothing better than to play USC for the [national] title,” Miles reportedly said in a speech to a heavily pro-LSU gathering in New Orleans. “I can tell you this, that they have a much easier road to travel. They’re going to play real knockdown drag-outs with UCLA and Washington, Cal-Berkeley, Stanford — some real juggernauts — and they’re going to end up, it would be my guess, in some position so if they win a game or two, that they’ll end up in the title [game]. “I would like that path for us. I think the SEC provides much stiffer competition.”

I’m not the biggest USC fan by any means, but their coaching and talent is excellent. I can’t wait to lol @ Les Miles when Virginia Tech rolls through and beats them in week two (yes i just said that). USC held a 7-3 lead in its BCS title game against Texas when Longhorns quarterback Vince Young seemed to touch his knee down before throwing an option pitch that went for a touchdown. The play was screaming for a replay review, but on college football’s biggest stage of the season, the replay-review system malfunctioned, depriving officials of the right play to review. The illegal touchdown stood, setting up Young’s final scrapbook moment — fourth-and-five from the Trojans’ eight, an obvious passing situation. USC plays it that way, looking for a pass that never comes, as Young pulls the ball down and sprints for the pylon for the winning score. Texas fans and the national media immediately declared Young “unstoppable,” but here we saw it differently. Here we are aware of the truth. Here we know that twice in that big game, Young was nothing but awfully lucky.
